This Grill idea has been rolling around in my head for a couple years but I just hadn’t found the time or all the parts to pull it off. She is made from an actual engine; all of the parts are real auto parts right down to the distributor and shifter handle. The only non automotive parts are the burners and cooking surface.  She has been converted from a gas guzzling hotrod engine into a flashy steak sizzling machine, trading in her high octane horsepower for clean burning propane BTU’s.  She is still a work in progress as are all custom builds, but now that she has proved to be a functional unit it’s time to dress her up a bit.  One of the things I’m still working on is the afterburners.  The exhaust flames are just for fun but do work well for marshmallows.

The original concept was only intended as a cost effective alternative to building my next Hotrod, just a small economy project that wouldn’t tax the pocketbook too much while providing me some satisfaction and entertainment value.  I thought I would build a cool BBQ for my deck and entertain a few friends with the novelty.  Well that idea lasted for about a split second, once she grilled her first 4th of July Steak and people got a look at her off to the car show we go for a test run.

I can’t take credit for everything, when it came to the cutting and welding I enlisted a lot of help from my neighbor, Terry Bacon, he just has cooler tools than I do and it gave me an excuse to get to use some of them.  Building her has been quite fun and an interesting. When I pitched the idea to some of my friends, most thought I was a little off or had just plane lost my mind but after seeing her in working order have done a complete 180.  In the short few weeks that she has been cooking, the attention she has received is quite humbling and the reactions from the onlookers have kept me well entertained. Jeff Foxworthy would be proud!  Yes, “You might be a redneck if your BBQ is made from the blown engine out of your huntin’ truck”!  Heck even my Diet Redneck friends like her.

I hope you enjoy looking!  Now it’s time to kick back and enjoy a few beers and cook a steak or two on the back porch.
